An estimated 40 million people need a prosthetic limb in sub-Saharan Africa — but the truth is, nobody actually knows
only 5–10% have access to one
That is the equivalent of the entire population of Poland, left without the ability to walk.
The problem

A crisis nobody is
talking about

Every year, UK and European rehabilitation centres discard thousands of functional prosthetic components — thrown in a skip because there is no system to reuse them.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, amputees wait years for a limb that never comes. Too few prosthetists, too few clinics, no supply chain.

The cost of inaction is staggering. Lost limbs mean lost livelihoods, lost incomes, lost contributors — adding up to billions in lost productivity every year.

This is not a technology problem.
It is an infrastructure problem.
And almost nobody is working on it.
What STAND does

More than a leg.

Since 2013, STAND has collected donated prosthetic components from UK and European rehabilitation centres and redistributed them across eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 22,000 prosthetic legs recycled and counting.

01

Collect and refurbish

We rescue prosthetic components from UK and European centres before they are destroyed.

02

Deliver

We ship to partners in The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Benin, Senegal, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya.

03

Rehabilitate the whole person

A prosthetic is only the start. STAND provides emotional support, peer counselling, community reintegration, and vocational training.

But recycling is a sticking plaster. It cannot solve a systemic failure. That is why we are building something bigger.

What we are building

The Rehab Ledger

There is no global system for tracking prosthetic need, supply, or outcomes in low-income countries. Nobody can see the gap, plan for it, or close it.

The vision

A digital layer connecting prosthetic supply with clinical demand across sub-Saharan Africa — making the invisible visible and the unmeasured measurable.

We are building this vision now, and we need your help.

Founder of STAND. Probably the guy carrying the suitcase full of prosthetic feet.
