Evolving Together: The Next Step for Legs4Africa

April 11, 2024

Embarking on a new year, we find ourselves reflecting on the vibrant communities we’ve nurtured through Legs4Africa. This journey, rich in change and adaptation, mirrors our unwavering commitment to providing essential support where it’s needed. Since our humble beginnings in 2013, Legs4Africa has blossomed from a seedling of an idea into a mighty tree of hope and support. Yet, in every narrative of growth, there inevitably arises a moment for introspection, renewal, and thoughtful reevaluation.

Change, they say, is the only constant, and at Legs4Africa, we’re embracing this wholeheartedly. Over the coming months, we’ll be embarking on a voyage of transformation. We’re not just changing our name; we’re reshaping our identity to more closely align with our charitable ethos and the broader impact of our efforts.

The name ‘Legs4Africa’ has been our banner as we’ve journeyed through the years. It’s a name that’s seen us forge incredible partnerships, build a community of dedicated supporters, and most importantly, make a real difference in the lives of so many. But as we’ve evolved, we’ve come to realise that our name, while powerful, doesn’t quite capture the full spectrum of our work.

Our mission transcends the physical provision of prosthetic legs. It’s about empowerment, community building, and fostering sustainable change. We’ve grown to understand that while we may not be providing prosthetic legs for the entirety of Africa, our impact is nonetheless profound and far-reaching. This evolution calls for a name that encapsulates our broader commitment to supporting communities and individuals.

In this spirit of introspection and growth, we’re also engaging in a deeper dialogue about decolonising narratives within the charity sector. It’s a necessary conversation, one that challenges us to look beyond traditional perspectives and strive for a narrative that’s inclusive, respectful, and reflective of the communities we serve.

Our new name, which we’re in the process of crafting, will be a symbol of this ongoing journey. It will represent our commitment to not only providing physical support but also to nurturing the seeds of empowerment and independence in the communities we serve. It’s about being more than what it ‘says on the tin’, transcending our origins while honouring the path we’ve travelled together.

As we look to the horizon, we do so with a sense of excitement and determination. This change is more than a rebranding; it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to making a meaningful difference. It’s about aligning our name with our mission, our vision, and the hopes of those we serve.

So, let us embrace this change together, with open hearts and minds, as we continue to make strides in our mission. The road ahead is filled with possibilities, and we’re excited to embark on this new chapter of our journey hand in hand with our community of changemakers, supporters, and partners. The future is bright, and our steps, though changing, are as sure and purposeful as ever.

Name: Tom Williams

My passion? Ensuring no prosthetic leg goes unused. I’m dedicated to collecting, refurbishing, and sending these vital pieces of technology to our partners in Africa, where they make a world of difference. When I’m not immersed in this mission at STAND, I’m often found outdoors, embracing nature. I love long walks in any season, camping under the stars, and enjoying the serenity of the great outdoors. My evenings often involve a unique hobby – maintaining and repairing old pinball machines. This blend of precision and nostalgia keeps me engaged and always learning. This fusion of dedication to my work and my love for nature and tinkering drives me every day, both at STAND and beyond.
