Legs Collected from Sheffield thanks to The Rotary Club of Rushcliffe

January 14, 2020

The Rotary Club of Rushcliffe are well known for their active involvement in the community and for their generosity to support good causes both close to home and thousands of miles away.

Having seen a BBC report highlighting the work that Legs4Africa is doing Peter Hewlett from the Rotary Club of Rushcliffe reached out to see if we needed any assistance collecting prosthetic legs across the Midlands.

In 2019 Legs4Africa managed to recycle 2,252 prosthetic legs, diverting them from landfill, and servicing the components before sending them to professionals at limb fitting centres in Africa. These limbs mainly come from hospitals in the UK and collecting these has always been one of the charities challenges, thankfully over the years Legs4Africa has built a reliable network of Rotary Clubs to help make these collections.

On this occasion Peter from The Rotary Club of Rushcliffe volunteered to drive up to the Blatchfords – Mobility & Specialised Rehabilitation Centre in Sheffield to collect about 40 prosthetic legs that had been returned to them. Most of the legs had been partially dismantled by the Blatchfords team with their sockets already removed, the remaining components will be passed on to our Men’s Sheds friends to be fully dismantled before before prepared for the next shipment.

My passion? Ensuring no prosthetic leg goes unused. I’m dedicated to collecting, refurbishing, and sending these vital pieces of technology to our partners in Africa, where they make a world of difference. When I’m not immersed in this mission at STAND, I’m often found outdoors, embracing nature. I love long walks in any season, camping under the stars, and enjoying the serenity of the great outdoors. My evenings often involve a unique hobby – maintaining and repairing old pinball machines. This blend of precision and nostalgia keeps me engaged and always learning. This fusion of dedication to my work and my love for nature and tinkering drives me every day, both at STAND and beyond.
